Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師)

Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師, Hagane no Renkinjutsushi) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Arakawa Hiromu. The world of Fullmetal Alchemist is styled after the European Industrial Revolution. Set in a fictional universe in which alchemy is one of the most advanced scientific techniques, the story follows the brothers Edward and Alphonse Elric, who are searching for a Philosopher’s Stone to restore their bodies after a disastrous failed attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy.

The anime series had its original run from October 4th, 2003 to October 2nd, 2004, in a set of 51 episodes. Later, from April 5th, 2009 to July 4th, 2010, a 64-episode remake was done, changing some details of the story, and improving greatly the animation quality. Both runs had one following movie each (The Conqueror of Shamballa, and The Sacred Star of Milos, respectively)

Edward and his younger brother Alphonse Elric are alchemists born in the village of Resembool from the country of Amestris (アメストリス), living with their mother Trisha Elric. Their father, Von Hohenheim, left home for unknown reasons. After Trisha died of a terminal illness years later, Edward became determined to bring her back through the advanced science of alchemy. Obtaining knowledge from their teacher Izumi Curtis, the Elric Brothers researched Human Transmutation, a forbidden art in which one attempts to create or modify a human being. However, the transmutation resulted with the creation of a malformed creature that lived for a few seconds at the cost of Edward’s left leg and Alphonse’s entire body. In a desperate effort to save his brother, Edward sacrificed his right arm to affix Alphonse’s soul to a suit of armor.

Some days later, an alchemist named Roy Mustang visited the Elric brothers, and proposed that Edward become a State Alchemist in exchange for more research materials to find a way to restore himself and Alphonse. After his childhood friend Winry Rockbell and her grandmother Pinako replaced his missing limbs with automail, a type of advanced prosthetic limb, Edward learned he can transmutate matter without a transmutation circle.

With a lot of study and investigation, the Elric brothers are determined to find a way to recover their bodies, but it won’t be an easy task, as they are not the only ones who want the powers of the Philosopher’s Stone…

In 2005, Japanese television network TV Asahi conducted a “Top 100” online web poll and nation-wide survey; the Fullmetal Alchemist anime adaptation placed first in the online poll and 20th in the survey. In 2006, TV Asahi conducted another online poll for the top one hundred anime, and Fullmetal Alchemist placed first again.

This time, I leave you a trailer of the first movie! Enjoy!
