ef – a fairy tale of the two (エフ ア フェアリー テイル オブ ザ トゥー) is is the overall title of a two-part Japanese adult visual novel series by Minori for the PC as a DVD. Before its release, a manga based on the overall story started serialization in April 2005. In addition, a light novel was serialized from July 2006 to July 2008.
A 12-episode anime adaptation titled ef: A Tale of Memories was produced by Shaft and aired between October and December 2007. A second season of the anime titled ef: A Tale of Melodies aired 12 episodes between October and December 2008.
First, the plot of the first season.
On Christmas Eve, Hirono Hiro meets a girl named Miyamura Miyako as she chases a purse snatcher. Hiro later finds out that Miyako also goes to the same school as he does and they start hanging out together. This makes Hiro’s childhood friend, Shindou Kei, feel left out, so she tries to compete with Miyako for Hiro’s affection, creating a love triangle.
Meanwhile, Asou Renji meets a girl named Shindou Chihiro at an abandoned train station. He soon learns that Chihiro suffers from a type of amnesia where her memory lasts for only 13 hours. He also discovers Chihiro’s dream of writing a novel, but she has never been able to fulfill that dream due to her condition. Renji then decides to help her fulfill that dream.
On the second season, as in the first one, there are two stories. The first story takes place in the past. Himura Yuu meets a girl, Amamiya Yuuko who seems to know him, but he doesn’t know her. However, he soon remembers that she was a girl whom he knew from long ago. Yuuko then tells him something which he never knew. He was her first love since then, and her first love has not ended yet.
The second story takes place in the present, just after the events of ef – A Tale of Memories. Shuuichi Kuze meets the cousin of Asou Renji, Hayama Mizuki and spends a lot of time with her. Unknown to Mizuki, Kuze had contracted a fatal illness and has little time left to live. Kuze had decided to break all romantic ties, but things go bad when Mizuki tells him that she loves him.
This anime is quite special and different from the general ones. Despite being a romance, it has a really deep psychological side, which confers it a somehow “philosophical” atmosphere. I really liked it and recommend it!
Both the opening songs are interpreted by Elisa, and worth listening to! Check below!
